Tシャツに書かれている「此の山中に野槌と云う物あり」は、江戸時代の文献『 信濃奇勝録』に記された記述で、現在の馬籠峠付近の山中に「野槌」（ツチノコ）という生物がいることを示しています。 信濃奇勝録には、「旧暦の八月（現代の9月）のころ、たまたま出てくることがあるが、めったに見るものではない。形は蛇のようで、胴がやや太く、大きさには大小がある。大きいものは長さ一尺二、三寸（約40センチほど）、太さは一寸（約3センチほど）ほどである。動き方も蛇のようである。険しい坂を横切るときには、転がり落ちていくが、特に危険な動きをすることはない。人に害を与えることもないという。」と書かれています。

In the Edo-period document Shinano Kishōroku (Records of the Wonders of Shinano), there is a passage that reads: “In these mountains lives a creature called Nozuchi.” This refers to a being said to inhabit the mountain area near today’s Magome Pass — what is now believed to be the Tsuchinoko, a legendary snake-like creature of Japanese folklore.

According to the Shinano Kishōroku:
“During the eighth month of the old lunar calendar (around September today), it may occasionally appear, though sightings are extremely rare. Its shape resembles that of a snake, but its body is somewhat thicker, and its size varies. The larger ones are about one shaku two or three sun in length (roughly 40 centimeters) and about one sun thick (around 3 centimeters). Its movements are also like those of a snake. When crossing a steep slope, it rolls down the hill, but it shows no particularly dangerous behavior. It is said to cause no harm to humans.”
